Hydrastis canadensis, distinguished by its yellow roots, is a perennial herb in the buttercup family and native to Canada and the eastern United States. Threats from overharvesting, unregulated wildharvesting, and habitat loss have placed goldenseal on United Plant Savers’ “at risk” list. By 1910 goldenseal was nearly harvested to extinction in the wild and is still a rare plant in some regions due to overharvesting. As such, we highly recommend that goldenseal be purchased and used consciously and with concern to its environmental vulnerability. 

We are mindful of only purchasing ethically cultivated and harvested goldenseal root powder in our Apothecary. We recommend using alternative herbs with similar functions and uses whenever possible. 

Goldenseal powder can be applied as an herbal poultice, infused as an extract, encapsulated, or blended into topical creams. Goldenseal may be used to soothe inflammatory conditions affecting the mucous membranes of the respiratory, digestive, and genitourinary systems.
